W05 Blog: Culture Differences Concerning Time
In regards to time cultures have different views. Now, I'm not talking about the time on a clock or the various time zones around the world. Rather, I'm talking about schedule.
Some cultures have deadlines for assignments that are set in stone and if the assignment is completed past the deadline there will be consequences. However, some cultures do not focus on having a strict schedule, but rather, they focus on relationships and the opportunity for the assignment to become the best version that it could be, even if the assignment is not finished on time. Rather than having a strict consequence (such as being put on probation or receiving a lower grade) praise may be given for completing the assignment and for taking the time to make it the best version that it could be.
There are a few ways to look at time: monochronic and polychronic. Monochronic focuses on being strict to a deadline or being on time. Whereas polychronic focuses on relationships. When two or more people are put together in a situation, such as student-teacher relationship, it can be important to discuss time, whether meetings and assignments will be done in a monochronic way or a polychronic way.
